AT&T Evaluating Support for iOS Personal Hotspot but Have No Plans to Announce Soon

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 05:00 AM PST

One of the defining features of the Verizon iPhone has to be the all new Personal Hotspot feature, which gives the device an edge over its AT&T counterpart.

What Personal Hotspot does is that it enables your (Verizon for now) iPhone to create a wireless network using which up to 5 devices can connect to the Internet, through the iPhone itself. The wireless network can be created via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB.

Obviously, AT&T's iPhone is devoid of this feature, while iOS 4.3 Beta does bring the Personal Hotspot feature to GSM iPhones, an AT&T spokesperson has told Engadget that they are "evaluating the feature, but have no plans to announce at this time", which makes it seem as if AT&T is waiting for the data pricing plan or hotspot tax Verizon is yet to unveil, because beating Verizon by introducing a competitive data pricing plan is one tactical move that AT&T can definitely make.

Verizon is going to release the iPhone for its loyal customers on February 3rd, while those willing to make the switch from AT&T will have to wait until February 10th, let us see if AT&T finishes "evaluating" the Personal Hotspot feature and starts supporting it on the iPhone as well.

Watch Official Music Videos Using YouTube 2.0 for Android Application

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 03:28 AM PST

Popular internet video sharing service YouTube has announced that it is bringing Vevo's full line of music videos to the YouTube Android app, and the company has also announced that starting Wednesday, they will start delivering pre-rolls ads for Android as well.

Those devices which are running Android 2.2 Froyo or higher can download the latest YouTube 2.0 app from the Market, and what seems to be the defining feature of this app is the fact that you will be able to watch official music videos from big industry names such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna and other videos offered through Vevo's mobile app, on YouTube for Android. However it should be kept in mind that the same U.S. and international restrictions that apply to Vevo videos, will be applied to this particular app as well.

The YouTube Android app has been enhanced to improved the mobile music experience in many ways. Music videos are now labeled with a "music note" badge, as well as containing artist bios, track listings for any particular artist along with a list of related artists.

YouTube is also introducing pre-roll ads for its plethora of partners as a part of the YouTube 2.0 for Android launch, and these ads will apply to all videos and not just Vevo music videos. Pre-roll mobile ads can surely irk users, but it is a legitimate monetizing move from the video service, as the service claims that it exceeds 200 million views on mobile daily.

There is no word as yet on whether or not YouTube will be bringing music videos to other mobile platforms, particularly the iOS, as well as the mobile site, however it does seem that the Android platform is YouTube's testing arena for new mobile features.

Twitter Updates Its Mac App as Secret Backdoor Feature Is Removed

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 01:06 AM PST

According to a report published by Business Insider, Twitter has updated its Mac app for the Mac App Store with some slight changes, which includes a new blue icon instead of the previous black one.

Primarily, Twitter has updated the app to remove a secret backdoor that provided pre-release access to certain people, who had purchased beta access to Tweetie 2, presumably, this secret backdoor violated Apple's developer guidelines, which is said to be the reason behind the app being updated.

Users which had unlocked the bonus features will still have access to them, however new downloads of the Twitter app will not be able to access the screen that requires the information being typed in to access to special features.

The changelog for version 2.0.1:

  • Fixed crash when blocking user from search results
  • Fixed crash with non-Roman input source
  • Fixed problems with window positioning
  • Fixed @mention streaming with tweets indirectly addressed to you
  • Spaces behavior improved
  • UI tweaks

Samsung Vibrant Plus Will Be Fastest Device on T-Mobile’s Network

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:43 AM PST

A document has been leaked recently which gives considerable insight about an upcoming smartphone, the Samsung Vibrant Plus, showing that it will be the first device on T-Mobile's network to support HSPA 21+ Mbps data transfer speeds.

The remaining specifications of the Samsung Vibrant Plus seem to be relatively similar to the original Samsung Vibrant, which itself happens to be a modification of Samsung's Galaxy S: featuring a 4-inch super AMOLED touch screen, a 1 GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera and 16 GB of memory, expandable to 32 Gb.

The Samsung Vibrant Plus also features a front-facing camera that will work together with T-Mobile's QIK-powered video chat, and being similar to its predecessor, the Samsung Vibrant Plus is powered by Froyo, or Android 2.2, and as far as the design of these two devices is concerned, they are similar in that arena as well.

Fascinatingly enough the leaked document shows the device pictured alongside a promo image for the movie Inception whereas the original Samsung Vibrant shipped with the movie Avatar, and the mobile game The Sims 3 Collector's Edition. So it can be assumed that Samsung Vibrant Plus buyers just might get a free copy of Inception when they go on to buy this device.

Nvidia Tegra Zone Android App Helps Make Most Out of Dual Core Phones

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:26 AM PST

As we already know that "Tegra super phones" have been developed with the support of NVIDIA. This would be  the first dual core mobile processor which means better multi tasking, exceptional browsing and blazing fast gaming. However, one thing was still missing.

NVIDIA will be releasing Tegra Zone. This is an Android app that will allow you to truly experience the power of dual-core giants out there.

The Tegra Zone will offer reviews and HD content and will also support files of larger size especially games.  So far poor support to large files has discouraged developers. NVIDIA has invited developers to make new and better games by giving developers unlimited storage to host their applications.

Gameloft has already been invited by NVIDIA to join Tegra Zone. This means Gameloft  has made an agreement with Google to  "now" offer games at Android Market.

We soon expect to see ultimate gaming experience, powered by world's best processor on palm of your hand.

Untethered Jailbreak Tool for iOS 4.2.1 From Comex Coming Soon as He Decides Not to Wait for iOS 4.3/4.2.5 Release

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 05:53 AM PST

In the starting of January, we had reported that Comex's untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 4.2.1 which missed its Christmas deadline, was not going to be released anytime soon, as Comex was delaying the release to avoid any problems with Apple because the developer would not want his work to be undermined due to the release of a new firmware upgrade, as this particular tool will most probably be using a new hack. iPhoneitalia, the same site that broke this news first, has now brought another interesting scoop, which says that Comex may release his untethered jailbreak tool anytime in the near future.

iPhoneitalia contacted Comex asking whether or not he was planning on waiting for the Verizon iPhone 4 to launch and the next iOS update to be rolled out, iOS 4.3 or iOS 4.2.5, before releasing his untethered jailbreak tool, Comex's brief reply was that one month seemed too long to release the anxiously awaited untethered jailbreak tool.

iPhoneitalia asked:

So, if Apple releases iOS 4.2.5 on 10 February, you'll preserve your new tool and exploits for that firmware? Maybe this will be a good move. Dev Team and Chronic Dev are releasing their tools for iOS 4.2.1, your can be saved for the future too.

Comex replied:

I hadn't seen that.
Interesting.. but a month's
A long time to wait.

Obviously, this response from Comex contradicts what he previously said about waiting until Apple released iOS 4.3, but this also means that the untethered jailbreak tool might be ready now and will just might be released soon enough. Currently, the only way to achieve an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 is through Redsn0w. However, We will update when more news comes in.

Verizon Wireless Will Also Start Selling the iPad Which Connects Directly to their Network

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 05:26 AM PST

After ending AT&T's iPhone exclusivity in the US with the launch of the Verizon iPhone, according to a Bloomberg report, Verizon Wireless will also sell a version of the iPad that directly connects to their network, however as of now it is not known whether it will be based off of CDMA or LTE technologies.

Bloomberg reports:

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon's network. Shammo declined to say when the change may happen.

It was back in October last year when Verizon started selling the iPad with a Mifi hotspot bundle ranging from $629.99 to $829.99, and currently, Apple only offers versions of the iPad that connect directly to AT&T's network, which means that this could presumably spell more trouble for AT&T when Verizon starts selling iPads which will connect directly to its network, as AT&T has already lost its iPhone exclusivity in the US.

Do you think AT&T will lose out on a considerable number of customers once Verizon starts selling these iPads? Let us know what you think in your comments below.
