| Motorola Releases Short ‘Tablet Evolution’ Teaser Video Hinting Honeycomb Device at CES Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:09 AM PST It seems like we can expect some tough competition coming towards current tablet market dominators such as the iPad, Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry Playbook, which isn't actually a dominator, because it isn't available just yet, from none other than Motorola, which has released a short teaser video, which frankly teases a lot.
In this short teaser video, Motorola gives a flashback of earlier tablets in history, which were mostly carved out of rock and stone. Along the ride in history, it mocks current devices such as the iPad by referring to it as a “giant iPhone" and the Galaxy Tab by saying that it runs "Android OS, but Android OS… for a phone". Now there two ways to look at this video, first it can just be perceived as only bashing its competitors throughout the video, however it can also be perceived in a way that presents a message, a message which states that the iPad and the Galaxy Tab will be history just like those rock and stone tablets once Motorola is done with its ‘Tablet Evolution', something which the buzzing bee in front of Motorola's new red logo at the end of the video just might relate to, meaning that we shall definitely be seeing some Android 2.4 / 3.0 Honeycomb action as this version is specifically optimized for tablet devices. As the CES is just a couple of weeks away, we anxiously wait to see what Motorola has in store for us. Have a look at the short teaser video:

| Tumblr Brings Curated Topic Pages for Improving Content Discovery Posted: 20 Dec 2010 10:07 PM PST Popular blogging platform Tumblr, which had recently been under a lot of criticism as it had disappeared off the internet for a whole 24 hours, has just launched three curated topic pages today in a bid to solve the problem of content discovery on Tumblr.
The mechanism behind the function of these curated topic pages is very simple as there will be contributors and editors with each tag page who will curate what displays in the tag, users will then be able to follow them in order to obtain updates in their Tumblr Dashboard. It is also being said this feature will soon be adding more categories and editors will be reached out to for their volunteer help to curate new pages. Mark Coatney, media evangelist at Tumblr says:
Curated posts are included as default on these pages, including most popular posts within that tag category and the raw stream. A "tracked tag" is displayed in a user's Tumblr Dashboard when they follow a particular tag. These pages are currently available in three categories being News, Fashion and Long-Reads, however they are still in beta. Via Mashable |

| Gmail Users Will Still Be Able To Make Free Phone Calls throughout Next Year Posted: 20 Dec 2010 08:17 PM PST The good news from Google never does end! The company has announced that it has extended the period of the feature using which Gmail users are able to make free phone calls to the U.S. and Canada, through 2011, meaning that this feature will remain to be free next year.
One may ask how exactly is a call executed through Gmail? Well the service is easily accessible via the Gmail page and if one uses gChat, There's a phone icon bearing the words "Call Phone" right underneath the status message of the user and when this phone icon is pressed, a dialpad window is launched within Gmail allowing the user to call any number in the U.S. or Canada, absolutely free. Earlier this year, back in August to be exact, Gmail got the calling feature and Google had said that using this feature, users can make such calls free "for at least the rest of the year," while international dialing rates started at $0.02 per minute. The service proved to be a hit after its launched as a staggering number of 1 million calls were placed within 24 hours of the launch and many people had already termed it as a potential Skype killer, regardless of the fact that there hasn't been much said about the traction the service is getting since then, the extension of free calling throughout 2011 will definitely help the service in maintaining its current large number of users as well as entice others to join in. | AOL Quickly Acquires Splash-page Startup About.me 4 Days After It Was Officially Launched Posted: 20 Dec 2010 07:42 PM PST About.me, a new Splash-page startup which terms itself as a custom profile & personal analytics dashboard has just been acquired by AOL, and it has been only four days since it was officially launched to the public. The amount, at which the acquisition has been made, was not disclosed.
Even before its public release, About.me had gained popularity with those who signed up in the beta stages, even though registration was not open for all, it usually meant waiting for an invite to set up a profile. Those new to About.me, are going to find this service quite useful as it allows users with tools which they can use to create colorful profile pages that can connect and easily pull in content from their respective social media streams. Back in September About.me had began letting prospective users reserve their names and pages and had officially launched on December 16th, now About.me is an AOL owned property. Co-founder Tony Conrad says:
Now, seeing that the future of About.me lies in AOL's hands, it can be safely assumed that the new publicly launched startup can remain intact under AOL as Tony Conrad and the team will be joining the Consumer Applications Group led by Brad Garlinghouse. Following the public launch, have you set up a page at About.me? Let us know in your comments below. Via Mashable |
| Foursquare Unleashes Version 2.2 of iPhone App Featuring Photos and Comments Posted: 20 Dec 2010 07:28 AM PST The competition between the location based check-in services seems to grow each day as couple of weeks back, we saw Gowalla present competition in a unique way, by linking up with its rivals, Foursquare and Facebook. So the reason by which Gowalla got the upper hand was that it featured comments and pictures, for starters. However now, it looks like Foursquare has followed suit and in its new update it has brought these features, along with a host of others.
Great news is that Foursquare has finally added both the comments and pictures feature which will initially be available on the iPhone app and the website, however it is being said that Android and BlackBerry will receive these features next week and month respectively. Giving support to the newly added picture feature, Instagram, PicPlz and Foodspotting are also on board. The mechanics behind this is that when a user checks-in at a venue on Foursquare they can take a picture and attach it to that particular venue, pictures can also be attached to the Tips area of the venue and these pictures will be public. Users can also check-in with a photo if they which to however it will only be visible to their friends on Foursquare, or if added, Twitter and Facebook as well. Comments work a little differently can they can also be made on a check-in of any particular user's stream while being visible to their own friends and their friends, the addition of comments will definitely make Foursquare a better social experience both online and offline. As photos are now supported in Foursquare, users can use Instagram, PicPlz and Foodspotting to send their photos to while checking-in simultaneously, however it should be noted that Instagram and Foodspotting will only be working on the iPhone app as they currently only support it, while PicPlz will be good to go on both the iPhone and Android devices. Excited about the latest Foursquare app for iPhone? Then you should definitely download it from here. Via TechCrunch |
