Posted: 22 Dec 2010 03:36 AM PST

Version 1.1 of Facebook for Windows Phone 7 features places and photo tagging, and is available in the Marketplace as of now, however the app still lacks a rather crucial feature which is present in the iPhone and Android apps, Facebook Chat.

Push Notifications is also another crucial feature that has been omitted from the Windows Phone 7 update, meaning that this particular app is way behind its iPhone and Android counterparts and surprisingly, live tile featuring is missing as well, which certainly is the defining element for the Windows Phone 7 platform

Obviously, Windows Phone 7 users would definitely not be happy that they will not be getting the chat and push notifications features, but on the bright side, the update still brings two new features for them.

Instagram for iPhone Achieves Milestone of 1 Million Registered Users

Posted: 22 Dec 2010 03:12 AM PST

Popular photo sharing app Instagram has been appreciated a lot by iPhone users, and last week, we saw Instagram update its iPhone app in order to keep those very users hooked to the service. So the numbers of the registered users are out, and they seem pretty impressive. Instagram has achieved a major milestone of 1 million registered users.

It was back in October this year, that this free iPhone app was made available on the iTunes App Store as it raked in 100,000 signups in its first week alone. Quite evidently, that number has remained constant as just 10 weeks after its initial appearance; the app has surpassed the 1 million registered user mark.

Regardless of the fact that Instagram is currently an iPhone only application, it allows its users to effortlessly share photos across social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and even Foursquare, and the recent update brought Posterous support as well. So it goes without a doubt that Instagram indeed has become the favorite photo sharing app for over 1 million iPhone users.

What makes this number even more impressive is the fact that Instagram is just limited to the iPhone and no other mobile platform has this service, so for it to reach such a big figure on just one particular platform, is indeed impressive.

How often do you use Instagram on your iPhone to share your pictures across favorite social networks? Let us know in your comments below.

Report Suggests that Amazon has Sold Over 8 Million Kindle Devices in 2010

Posted: 22 Dec 2010 12:24 AM PST

We're all familiar with Amazon's amazing Kindle applications for various mobile platforms and we're also familiar with the hardware device, Amazon's e-reader which is also called Kindle. In recent times, we've seen a handsome gain in popularity for Kindle apps and hardware alike, and now as the year 2010 comes to an end, we feel that Kindle has gained a lot of popularity specifically in this year, something which a new report suggests by putting the expected sales figures for this year at a staggering 8 million units.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek states that Amazon had sold 2.4 million Kindle devices in 2009, and if these numbers are treated as accurate, then this inevitably boils down to the fact that Kindle device's sales have grown three-fold in just one year.

However, the company is known for being secretive about the sales of Kindle, it was revealed that the Kindle 3 was by far the fastest selling Kindle device, even then no actual figures were released so as to provide that claim a substantial evidence, then again, for Amazon to keep the numbers to itself just might have a valid strategic reason, to the company.

The latest Kindle device was launched earlier this year, and it was much better in terms of performance and size, and it came with an affordable price tag of $139, which just might be the sole reason why the Kindle sales took off.

2011 is just around the corner, and the competition the e-readers arena is getting stronger, let us see what the new year yields for these companies, and in particular, the Amazon Kindle.

You Can Easily Untether your iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Using Next Version of Redsn0w Expected Around Christmas Eve

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:52 PM PST

iPhone Dev-Team which has pretty much been at the forefront of all Redsn0w and jailbreak news has had MuscleNerd confirm earlier today via Twitter that users will be able to untether their iPhone jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 using the next version of Redsn0w, which will have this option to untether jailbreak without the user having to restore the device. Check out the actual tweets down below.

MuscleNerd: Thanks to comex, redsn0w can now handle much bigger files than ramdisk 25MB limit. Useful for “backup plan” 4.2 untether

MuscleNerd: @jkurtz87 it shouldn't require a restore…just another redsn0w run. (That's the goal!)

One may ask, how exactly will they benefit from the next version of Redsn0w? Well primarily and rather crucially, users wouldn't have to reinstall any of their Cydia or iTunes' apps, they'll simply have to rerun Redsn0w jailbreak and it will be good to go.

Regardless of the fact that a definite release date for the next version of Redsn0w for all iOS devices has not be given out yet, it is expected to be available for download around Christmas ever, which falls later this weekend.

Apple Releases Free iAd Producer Desktop App to Help Prospective iAd Developers

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:44 PM PST

Ever since Apple introduced its advertising platform iAd, people and advertisers alike have been pretty excited about it as just recently we saw a demo of the iAd on the iPad featuring Tron: Legacy. However it seems now that the company will not be harsh about control of iAd creation as Apple has released a free desktop app by the name of iAd Producer, using which third parties can easily make their own iAds.

On the Apple Developer Page, the company says that the iAd Producer:

[iAd Producer] makes it easy for you to design and assemble high-impact, interactive content for iAd. iAd Producer automatically manages the HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript behind your iAd to make creating beautiful, motion-rich iAd content as easy as point and click.

So basically, those who do not possess advanced development expertise; the iAd producer effectively eliminates that barrier by making the creation of iAds available via a graphic user interface.

Back in August when the company introduced its iAd platform, they had some pretty big names already on board, which had paid lucratively to be a part of this high quality advertising platform. So regardless of the fact that the iAd Producer makes it very easy for iAd developers to actually make the iAd, they will all have to pass through Apple's comprehensive screening before being run on its iOS devices.

Apple Pulls Out Unofficial WikiLeaks App from the App Store

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:35 PM PST

Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has been under the limelight as well as tough times following the release of secret diplomatic cables, something which got so popular, that readers would have used any means possible to read the content as the website itself was under attack. There was an app for specifically this purpose as well, which was available on both the iPhone and the iPad, and was unofficial.

As written above, there "was" an app for that, although not anymore. The app which allowed the user to view WikiLeaks site content and follow the WikiLeaks Twitter account, has been removed from the iTunes App Store earlier today.

WikiLeaks App's description was:

The Wikileaks app gives instant access to the world's most documented leakage of top secret memos and other confidential government documents

The app was capitalizing upon the website by selling its content, which is free, for $1.99, and it was included in the app store on December 17th, which came as a shock to many as Apple is very strict when it comes to application approval, primarily because of the fact that the website and related people are highly controversial. However it cannot be said for sure if any direction violation of Apple's TOS was actually done.

It can also not be said for sure as to why Apple removed the app if it did not violate any terms per say, however we have seen many corporations distancing itself from the website, mainly due to its controversial nature, and this just might have been the case with Apple as well.

Apple TV Sales to Hit 1 Million Mark Later This Week With iTunes TV Show and Movie Rentals Escalating

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:27 PM PST

Apple TV's popularity and sales skyrocketed ever since its redesigned version was launched earlier this year in September. So since that initial launch, it has been around for three months, and later this week, the Apple TV is all set to hit the 1 million mark in sales worldwide.

Apple had seriously left everyone in awe when it released the latest version of the Apple TV, as it not only was lighter, smaller and more energy efficient, it also featured a host of other functions such as content streaming, support for Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe and really affordable rental pricing for TV shows, best of all, Apple TV came with a price tag of just  $99.99.

Things are really looking good for Apple in terms of the Apple TV considering the fact that 1 million units have been sold in just three months, the company also claims that that iTunes users are now renting and purchasing more than 400,000 TV episodes and more than 150,000 movies per day via the Apple TV.

So it seems like Apple has begun to leave its impression in the digital TV arena looking at how good the situation has been for it since the very start, one solid competitor to it, was the much hyped Google TV which has had faced channel blockages and product release delays, in that case, it would be right to assume that Apple TV is surely going to dominate the market.

Gingerbread OTA Update to Land on the Google Nexus One in Coming Weeks

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:17 PM PST

Google's first phone and also the device that made Android a household name today, was the Nexus One and since those days, we've seen the Android platform grow leaps and bounds with great interest from consumers and developers alike. No doubt the Google Nexus One was a huge it, which went on to lay the foundations of Google's latest device, the Nexus S.

However, earlier this year, it may have come as a shock to many Nexus One buffs as the device was officially discontinued as of this summer. Regardless of that, Nexus One users rejoice as the device is going to be updated with the latest version of Android, version 2.3 or Gingerbread as it is more commonly known. When? Google Nexus Twitter account answers that question in a Tweet shown in the picture above.

This HTC manufactured, Google branded device has undoubtedly been one of the most powerful Android powered device in the market which initially came with Android 2.1 and it was still the first device that was updated to Froyo, or Android 2.2, and if this "coming weeks" time window is actually true, the Nexus One will then also be one of the first few devices that will be running Android 2.3, or Gingerbread, in the market.

Windows Phone 7 Sales Figures Released by Microsoft Showing 1.5 Million Sold Devices Since Launch

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:32 PM PST

Microsoft had launched the Windows Phone 7 smartphones as a more consumer centered device in a bid to break into a market that was already captured by iPhone, Android and BlackBerry among others. Ever since the launch, we've seen a steady growth in its popularity and the addition of greater amount of apps as well; however now, Microsoft releases the first official sales number for the new Windows Phone 7 smartphones. What was the number? Read on below.

Windows Phone 7 sales have reached up to a staggering number of 1.5 million devices in just six weeks, quite impressive for this revamped mobile platform. Vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, Achim Berg revealed these numbers via a Q&A posted to the company's website, he adds that this sales figure is:

in line with our expectations – especially when compared to other new platform introductions

However, for the Windows Phone 7 to prevail as a dominator in the smartphone arena, it needs to take out its strong competitors such as Google and Apple as there are around 300,000 Android devices being activated daily while Apple sold 3 million iPhones in the first three weeks only.

Considering the above mentioned numbers, it can safely be assumed that the Windows Phone 7 still has a long way to go before it can prove to be as much of a contender as Google and Apple are to it.
