Apple Pulls Out VLC for iOS from the App Store

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 01:05 AM PST

Apple has now removed the VLC iOS application from the App Store, following a licensing issue that arose between the creators of the open-source VLC platform and the creators of the VLC iOS application. The app was removed after Apple received a formal notification of copyright infringement from VLC developers.

This particular conflict broke an Apple-created policy regarding DRM and the applications that are built off open-source projects. Apple's iTunes Terms and Conditions don’t allow users to install both free and paid apps on more than 5 devices. This goes against the original GNU license VLC’s code is based on, due to which the conflict broke out in the first place.

VLC developer Rémi Denis-Courmont said:

At last, Apple has removed VLC media player from its application store. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved – the hard way. I am not going to pity the owners of iDevices, and not even the MobileVLC developers who doubtless wasted a lot of their time. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone

Did you get the chance to try out the VLC iOS application? Let us know in your comments below, what you thought about this particular app, which will no longer be available on the iTunes App Store.

Apple iPad 2 To Be Released on 1st February 2011 [Rumor]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:23 PM PST

Popular technology angel  investor and the founder of Digg, Kevin Rose, claims that he has learnt through his reliable sources that Apple just might announce the next model of its magical tablet, the iPad, currently dubbed as the iPad 2, possibly in the next few weeks. 1st February 2011 , is an expected date.

Kevin Rose posted in his Foundation Newsletter that:

I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next “3-4 weeks”, possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras.

If you’re thinking of buying an iPad, hold off for now.

Apart from claiming the possible release of the iPad 2 next month, Kevin Rose also said that the iPad 2 might not be having a retina display, however he has been told by another source that the display of the iPad 2 will have a "higher dpi"

Spoke w/another source, the display has a “higher dpi”, but not technically a retina display. This seems odd to me, we’ll have to wait and see..

Do you really think this rumor can be true? Let us know in your comments below.

Verizon Wireless Schedules Press Event for Tuesday as Steve Job’s Appearance & Verizon iPhone Announcement Is Expected

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:38 PM PST

Here's another development in the case of the long awaited Verizon iPhone, as Digital Daily reports that Verizon Wireless is Verizon is hosting a special event at New York City's Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on January 11, 2011, which happens to be next Tuesday, the company has invited the press to this special event on Tuesday morning which will be hosted by hosted by President and COO Lowell McAdam. This could very well be the announcement of the Verizon iPhone as an appearance from Apple CEO Steve Jobs is also expected.

About the appearance of Steve Jobs, Digital Daily says:

While the appearance isn't 100 percent assured, sources in a position to know tell me that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Jobs will likely join McAdam onstage in New York when he announces the addition of the iPhone to its handset lineup.

If this really is the case here, with Apple and Verizon finally announcing the anxiously awaited Verizon iPhone, this will certainly end years of rumors and speculations that have surrounded this yet to be released device.

During the last couple of months, we've seen growing signs pertaining to the Verizon iPhone release, making it seem almost imminent. Previously, according to a report, the Verizon iPhone was said to be releasing on 3rd February 2011, as Apple has blocked all employee vacation requests through February 3rd to 6th 2011, which when compared to previous trends, is similar to the previous product announcement circumstances. This certainly means that Tuesday will be much anxiously awaited for, as it just might put an end to the whole Verizon iPhone mystery.

Meanwhile, check out this video which just might be showing what possibly can be the internal parts of the Verizon iPhone.

Do you think Verizon Wireless is finally going to announce the Verizon iPhone on Tuesday? Let us know what you think in your comments below.

Apple’s Mac App Store Has Already Been Cracked Open for Piracy although Hack Isn’t Available Until February 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:25 AM PST

Only yesterday, Apple's Mac App Store was ultimately launched, and as the first day passed experiencing 1 million apps being downloaded, here comes the interesting news. This metaphorically infant Mac App Store has just got its security cracked, says Gizmodo. More details on this down below.

The Mac App Store is cracked through installing a software called Kickback, using which you can pirate any application you like in the store, however the crack shall not be rolled out for the general public before February 2011, according to Dissident, member of the Hackulous community that cracked Apple’s Digital Rights Management system for iOS.

We don’t want to release kickback as soon as the [Mac App] Store gets released. I have a few reasons for that.

Most of the applications that go on the Mac App Store [in the first instance] will be decent, they’ll be pretty good. Apple isn’t going to put crap on the App Store as soon as it gets released. It’ll probably take months for the App Store to actually have a bunch of crappy applications and when we feel that it has a lot of crap in it, we’ll probably release Kickback.

So we’re not going to release Kickback until well after the store’s been established, well after developers have gotten their applications up. We don’t want to devalue applications and frustrate developers.

BlogsDNA reports about another hack using which the Mac App Store's paid app DRM can be cracked, meaning that via this hack, you can install paid apps, absolutely free.

The hack looks quite foolish as it is not more than just copying of one Apps resources files (paid app) into other free app.  But amazingly this hack worked for the apps he demonstrated on (Angry Birds & Twitter for Mac).

The method involves deleting some of the folders within paid App package and replacing it with once present in free app package.

Looks like Apple only has one sure fire way of dealing with these hacks, and that is to provide a test mode for all apps, instead of offering Lite and Trial version, which are generally not that satisfying. If a trial period based app testing system is introduced, it might effectively cut down on these hacks, as well as make it easier for potential buyers to achieve complete peace of mind regarding an app before they actually go on to purchase it.

Apple’s Mac App Store Experiences Downloads of 1 Million Apps On First Day

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:42 AM PST

It has just been one day since the highly anticipated and anxiously awaited Mac App Store finally went live, so it can safely be assumed, considering the fact that Mac users were really excited about this, that the Mac App Store would have attracted some serious attention towards itself on the first day only, and indeed it has, as users have downloaded over 1 million free and paid apps from Apple's newly revealed Mac App Store, Apple claims.

Apple CEO, Steve Jobs has said:

We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting

Only yesterday, the Mac App Store was officially launched featuring a little over 1,000 apps, and for it to achieve the 1 million apps downloading figure in just 24 hours, is definitely a huge achievement. However, Apple is discreet about revealing that which of these 1 million downloads were free, or paid apps, but then again, this is just the start for the Mac App Store, and we’re bound to see some really handsome numbers in the near future.

Have you went through the Mac App Store yet? What are your favorite apps? Let us know all, in your comments below.

Video Shows Android 2.3 Gingerbread Ported On A Jailbroken iPhone 3G

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:13 AM PST

Well well, what do we have here! These hackers never cease to surprise us as this new video shows us the latest version of the Google's signature Android mobile platform; Android 2.3 Gingerbread ported to a jailbroken iPhone 3G.

The video was released by Nick Pack through Twitter, he tweeted:

http://twitvid.com/6SWN3 – For those of you in doubt, this is Android Gingerbread on iPhone 3G, apologies for the crap video ;)

Looking at this video [external link]  you can see that the jailbroken iPhone 3G is indeed running Gingerbread, albeit rather lethargically, which however can be expected. Apart from that, all other features of Android 2.3 Gingerbread seem to running just fine on the iPhone. This hack is based on the iDroid project, meaning that both iOS and Android can be kept on the iPhone using dual boot configuration.

Release date for the masses to try this out has not been given out just yet, however, we will be sure to update you as soon as more information regarding this rolls in.

Verizon iPhone Release Slated for February 3rd 2011 According to Reports

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:36 AM PST

The Verizon iPhone has for long been shrouded in a mystery, especially since some rather interesting domain acquisitions regarding the Verizon iPhone were brought into light,  as details pertaining to its full specifications and pricing are not known as yet, as well as the major changes that it is supposed to feature, follow the link to see what just might be the internal parts of the next iPhone. Potential consumers have waited for long, but here is some news which just might brighten up their day. According to a report published by BGR, in which it claims that a source close to Apple has said that the company has blocked employee vacation requests through February 3rd to February 6th, 2011, which when compared to previous trends may mean that Apple and Verizon may finally announce the CDMA based Verizon iPhone. Read on below to find out how.

BGR reports:

Back in June of last year, Apple picked the dates of 24th to the 27th for its iPhone 4 weekend launch — also a Thursday through Sunday. In addition, Verizon Wireless typically launches new devices on Thursdays. While BGR has not yet confirmed that the Verizon iPhone is the device we'll see debut on the 3rd, the timing lines up very well with previous reports; no other Apple products have been rumored to be launching in this time frame.

So if this report is indeed legitimate, this ultimately means that from February 3rd 2011, AT&T will lose the iPhone exclusivity that it has enjoyed for long, as that day will finally mark the release of the anxiously awaited Verizon iPhone in the United States.
