Facebook Starts Rolling Out New Profile Design To All Users

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:53 AM PST

It was only last month, when Facebook introduced the new profile pages claiming that this new design/graphical overhaul will make it easier for its over 500 million users to communicate and interact with people over the social network. In the new design, some important features were reshuffled in a bid to make them more prominent and useful. Initially, Facebook gave users the option to opt-in for the new profile page, however now; Facebook has announced that it has begun rolling out the new profile to every user.

In the month of December, Facebook users had the option to switch to the new profile and the company claims that "hundreds of millions' of users willingly made the switch, so starting today, Facebook will be pushing every user into the new profile.

Here are the new profile features:

  • A quick summary of who you are (like where you live, work and grew up), right at the top of your profile
  • A row of recently tagged photos so friends can see what you’ve been up to lately
  • Room to highlight meaningful friendships (like teammates, co-workers or roommates)
  • More of your favorite activities and interests
  • The ability to tag your friends in important life experiences

On top of your new profile, you can also take a quick tour which will help you get accustomed to the new features or you can also go here to get more information about the new profile. However, contrary to the claims of the company, a considerable number of Facebook users seem to be unhappy with the new profile.

Did you opt-in for the new profile in December? Hate it or love it? Let us know your thoughts and reservations against the new Facebook profile in your comments below.

Kindle App Lands In The Mac App Store & Becomes Fifth Most Downloaded App As Yet

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:31 AM PST

Kindle is one product that has by far kept Amazon at the forefront of e-readers or e-reading apps for various mobile platforms, may it be the Kindle hardware or Kindle apps. So when Apple finally launched the long awaited Mac App Store, there was no way that Kindle would have been forgotten. The Kindle App is now available for download in the Mac App Store, and is already the fifth most downloaded free app.

With Kindle, it seems like Amazon is pursuing a "buy Once, Read Anywhere" strategy, meaning that once a user downloads a Kindle book, they should be able to continue reading it across any device that they have, be it the Kindle hardware itself, or via apps for the iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone 7, Windows PC and now the Mac. Amazon had already launched Kindle for Mac last March; however this version is distributed through the Mac App Store which is part of the latest update to the Mac OS X.

Interestingly enough, the Kindle apps on the iPhone and iPad are also going to be updated allowing users to access millions of free books, while enjoying better image zoom, and the ability to download books in the background, if they're doing something else on their device.

So head on down to the Mac App Store, download the Kindle for Mac app and do let us know in your comments what you think about it.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 6 Released Fixing Skype Related Issues after Untether

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:04 AM PST

The iPhone Dev-Team has now updated the Redsn0w 0.9.7 untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak tool to beta 6, primarily fixing Skype related issues that arose ever since the beta 1 of Redsn0w 0.9.7 was launched.

The Team has issued an anti-piracy plea in order to refrain people from pirating Apple software:

Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (the links won't work unless you're a legit developer currently logged in).

The iPhone Dev-Team says:

The sixth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!).  This version fixes Skype (and as expected all along, the Skype issue turns out to be unrelated to sandbox patches).

Unlike the last few betas, you can freely run beta6 over beta5 without a problem (but for testing purposes, we'd really like people to try both ways….from stock, and from already jailbroken).  If all you want to do is fix Skype and you're already untethered using beta5, just run beta6 and deselect every checkbox.

The Team has also added:

Now that the sandbox, Bluetooth, and Skype issues are fixed, our next priority is porting Monte back to 4.1.  We'll also try to make the Windows version less painfully slow.

What porting the "Monte" technique back to iOS 4.1 means is that users will be able to untether the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on their iOS devices, eliminating the need to have iOS4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on Cydia.

Just recently, the iPhone Dev-Team released beta 5 of Redsn0w 0.9.7 eliminating sandbox and Bluetooth related issues, and with the release of beta 6, the Skype related issues are eliminated as well. Hopefully the Windows version of Redsn0w will be coming soon right after the iPhone Dev-Team is finished fixing the performance related issues the Windows version is facing.

GreenPois0n Jailbreak Tool for iOS 4.2.1 Will Be Untethered upon Release & Won’t Require iOS4.2b3 SHSH Blobs

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 03:41 AM PST

Joshua Hill of the Chronic Dev Team, better known as p0sixninja, has revealed through his tweets that the team is working on their own untether for iOS 4.2.1 to include in the next version of GreenPois0n jailbreak tool rather than releasing a tethered version, the likes of Redsn0w 0.9.6.

Following is the conversation that took place on Twitter:

p0sixninja: A lot of people are saying another tethered jailbreak is pointless, I agree. Focusing on getting untethered before release

@p0sixninja I assume you are talking about Greenpois0n? Are you implementing Musclenerd’s untether or do you have your own?

@tahu363 we’re implementing our own

@p0sixninja I’m assuming “your own” will require 4.2b3 shsh? And thanks for your guys work!

@Capsfanchad lol no

What this conversation basically reveals is that the Chronic Dev Team will not be implementing the untether exploit from Comex and will not require iOS4.2b3 SHSH blobs like Redsn0w 0.9.7 does. Joshua has said that the team is working on "our own"" untether exploit.

There is no word as yet when the next version of GreenPois0n jailbreak tool can be expected, however we shall be sure to report when any updates come in.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 5 Released Fixing Bluetooth and Sandbox Related Issues

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 03:14 AM PST

We have been extensively following and reporting every bit of news related to the Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool, and now the iPhone Dev-Team has released beta 5 of Redsn0w 0.9.7. Beta 5 is said to fix all sandbox-related issues, as well as Bluetooth related issues on an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

iPhone Dev-Team has also added an anti-piracy plea in a bid to issue a warning for those people who may be pirating the iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware.

The Team says:

The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!).  Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too).

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it's excruciatingly slow compared to the Mac version because it's forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it's processing the very large IPSW images.  It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won't be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.

The iPhone Dev-Team also says that the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 is almost ready, however it is quite slow to use, so it won't be released until they fix those performance related issues.

Meanwhile, you can also check out our reports on beta 1, beta 2, beta 3 and beta 4 of Redsn0w 0.9.7.

Google to Launch Android 2.4 “Ice Cream” This Summer [Report]

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 02:51 AM PST

We've seen some pretty interesting names when it comes to versions of the Android operating system, and here we have a similarly interesting name pertaining to the next version of the Android OS, Android 2.4. We already know about Gingerbread or Android 2.3 and we also know about the tablet-optimized version of this OS, called Honeycomb or Android 3.0. Regarding Android 2.4, word is that this particular version will be dubbed as "Ice Cream", reports Mashable.

This new iteration of Google's signature mobile OS is apparently called "Ice Cream" according to Android's flavorful and alphabetical naming convention. There was a confusion regarding the version number, however the name Ice Cream has been around for quite some time.On the other hand, Pocket Lint reports that it has seen a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc running the new OS on the CES show floor in Las Vegas last week,

Last year in May, Android 2.2 a.k.a Froyo was revealed at Google I/O and later on went to spread across devices through summer. In October last year, Google confirmed Gingerbread and it was rolled out in December. So considering previous trends, an I/O-timed announcement in May 2011 followed by a summer rollout can completely be expected from Google.

No doubt, the Android platform has gained a respectable market share in an amazingly short span of time, which definitely means that official details from the company regarding the next version of this brilliant OS are anxiously awaited.
