iOS 4.3 To Bring Personal Hotspot Feature To GSM iPhone 4 Following Carrier Consent?

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 05:10 AM PST

Rumors have already started floating the Internet since Verizon showcased its CDMA-based iPhone 4 running an unreleased iOS 4.2.5 featuring Personal Hotspot feature, through which up to 5 devices can connect to the Internet through the wireless network that the iPhone 4 creates, that the next iOS upgrade, presumably iOS 4.3, will bring the Personal Hotspots feature to GSM iPhones.

Currently, this feature is only available on the iOS 4.2.5 running Verizon iPhone which is said to release February 3rd, however iPhoneclub.nl reports that the Personal Hotspots feature shall soon be making its way to existing iPhones through an iOS 4.3 update.

iPhoneclub.nl reports:

We received this information from a reliable source within the local telecommunications industry, our 100% correct information previously unannounced firmware versions provided. At the next major update iOS (4.3), the feature, provided that your operator supports tethering.

It should also be kept in mind that the Personal Hotspots feature is subject to the approval of individual carriers, meaning that the network's consent is needed before its customers can use this feature. There is no word as yet, when this update will be rolled out to the public.

Verizon iPhone Acts As A “Personal Hotspot” While Runnning Unreleased iOS 4.2.5

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 04:49 AM PST

Yesterday, all the rumors finally ended as the Verizon iPhone 4 was announced, and while the device is in many ways similar to the iPhone 4 on AT&T's network, there are some small changes to the antenna on the side, apart from that, the Verizon iPhone, said to be releasing on February 10, is running an unreleased version of iOS. Verzion 4.2.5 (8E128), to be exact, which brings one defining feature to the Verizon iPhone and that is Personal Hotspots.

One might ask what exactly Personal Hotspots is. The Verizon iPhone will come with this killer feature which will allow the device running iOS 4.2.5 to become an internet hub for up to 5 WiFi devices to connect to, something which the AT&T iPhone 4 does not have, but then again, this shows that there is definitely a need for modified software to use this feature, and it is being said that this software, iOS 4.2.5, will be released simultaneously with the Verizon iPhone 4 on 3rd February 2011.

The question to ponder upon over here is that when the release date mentioned above is reached, will the AT&T iPhone 4 get an upgrade to iOS 4.2.5 or is this feature supposed to remain exclusive to the Verizon iPhone 4? Or maybe iOS 4.3 or iOS 5 will bring this feature? That remains to be seen.

The "Personal Hotspot" area is built right into the Settings app in iOS 4.2.5, and as you click on this, it will launch the screen shown below. Here, you can turn it "on" as well as set a password if you choose to set it up for Wi-Fi use.

Connecting using Wi-Fi is not mandatory, you can also set the Personal Hotspot up to use Bluetooth or USB; however it is evident that both of them are specifically for one-to-one connections. Fundamentally, it seems that "Personal Hotspot" replaces the "tethering" option found in the current iOS build. However, if you do opt for connecting via Wi-Fi, the screen shown below will pop up, asking you for a confirmation, as the Wi-Fi connected Personal Hotspot might gobble up more battery juice.

Once you tap On, you're done. The "Network" area show below displays that the Personal Hotspot is set to "on". You simply open your computer network settings and choose "iPhone".

The Personal Hotspot feature is certainly an amazing one, however it can not be said for sure whether or not the AT&T iPhone 4 will be getting this feature via an iOS upgrade, as Apple has not made any comment regarding this.

What do you think of the Verizon iPhone 4? Are these offerings enough to entice you to make the jump from AT&T to Verizon? Do let us know in your comments below.

How To Jailbreak AppleTV Using Seas0nPass [Tutorial]

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 03:38 AM PST

A new jailbreak tool called Seas0nPass, designed specifically for the AppleTV has been launched by FireCore. Using Seas0nPass, you can easily jailbreak the AppleTV running the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software and perform a tethered boot when necessary.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple ‘tethered boot’ option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an ‘un-tethered’ jailbreak is not yet available.

Follow this tutorial to jailbreak your AppleTV using Seas0nPass.

What You Will Need:

  1. Latest version of iTunes
  2. Download Seas0nPass
  3. A micro USB cable

Step 1: Unzip the ‘Seas0nPass.zip’ file and launch Seas0nPass.

Step 2: If your AppleTV is already jailbroken, you just need to scroll down in order to learn how to perform a tethered boot and if your AppleTV is not yet jailbroken, select ‘Create IPSW’.

Step 3: Seas0nPass will now download the latest AppleTV software and use it to create a custom ‘jailbroken’ software file.

Step 4: Seas0nPass will then prompt you to connect your AppleTV using a micro-USB cable (leave power disconnected), then hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete, meaning that your AppleTV is now jailbroken. Please follow the instructions given below to learn how to perform a tethered boot

How to perform a tethered boot on your AppleTV using Seas0nPass:

A tethered boot means that the AppleTV must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. Please keep in mind that the AppleTV MUST be disconnected from the computer, for a brief moment, after restoring in iTunes in order for the tethered boot procedure to execute properly.

Step 1: Launch Seas0nPass and select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option.

Step 2: Seas0nPass will them prompt you to connect the AppleTV to your computer via micro USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 3: Seas0nPass will then complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable, connect the HDMI cable and enjoy your jailbroken AppleTV.

Google Won’t Be Naming Android 2.4 as “Ice Cream”; They’re Calling It “Ice Cream Sandwich”

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:58 AM PST

It was only yesterday when we reported that the next iteration of Google's signature mobile operating system Android, will be called Ice Cream, considering the fact that we've seen some pretty interesting names in the past like Android 2.2 or Froyo, Android 2.3 or Gingerbread and the tablet optimized Android 3.0 or Honeycomb. However, TechCrunch claims that it has heard through Android chief Andy Rubin that the presumably dubbed Android 2.4 or "Ice Cream" would actually be called Ice Cream Sandwich.

TechCrunch reports:

It was mentioned in passing as he spoke with Michael Arrington and me about the Nexus S, which was released last month. Granted, it was only said in passing, but Rubin doesn't seem the sort to just rejigger the names of his OS releases on the fly. And besides, it makes perfect sense. Android devotees already know that each operating system update is given the name of a dessert, and that these names have gone in alphabetical order (Donut, Eclair, etc.).

Internet search giant Google also places a giant sculpture of the appropriate dessert in front of Android HQ, which happen to be version names for its mobile platform. The sculpture shown below was created for Froyo (short for frozen yogurt), which was Android 2.2.

Regardless of the fact that making an Ice Cream sculpture to compliment their next version of Android would prove to be a hassle for Google engineers who would try their best to differentiate between soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt, as per this report, Google will henceforth be naming the next version of Android as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Verizon Wireless Officially Introduces CDMA-based iPhone 4 in the US

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 09:10 AM PST

Finally after months of talk, rumors, reports and scuttlebutt, the iPhone 4 has officially landed on Verizon Wireless and will be available for purchase to all Verizon customers in mid February.

This news is important because it ends the reign of AT&T as the official and only exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the US and of course provides a better (and much stable) carrier option for the consumers who plan to buy a new iPhone.

After talking up his new LTE network a bit, Verizon CEO Lowell Mcadam confirmed a CDMA (non-LTE) version of the iPhone 4 is coming to Verizon Wireless next month. Talks started way back in 2008, and the phone has been in testing for a year — it sounds like they wanted to get this one right. Current Verizon customers will be able to pre-order on Feburary 3rd for the standard $200 price for the 16GB model on a two year agreement, $300 for the 32GB version — everyone else can order on February 10th. Just to clarify and put any wild rumors to bed, the phone is Verizon 3G (EV-DO) only, no 4G data or GSM roaming. It’s not a world phone or an AT&T + Verizon phone, it’s just a Verizon phone.

Here are some of the fun-facts. The CDMA-based iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless has a new antenna which fixes the antenna reception problem. Given the nature and technology, users won’t be able to use data while talking. The iPhone will come with a built-in hotspot app that will allow users to create 3G hotspot to be used with other devices.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs Will Join Rupert Murdoch on stage to Reveal ‘The Daily’ on January 19 [Report]

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 06:34 AM PST

Following speculations that News Corp. is all set to reveal the iPad only newspaper, The Daily, on January 19, 2011, it is now being said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will join Rupert Murdoch on stage at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to reveal iPad newspaper, The Cutline reports.

As of now, the date for the said event is January 19, however it is subject to change as neither Apple nor News Corp. have officially confirmed that the event is happening on that date.

As previously mentioned, The Daily is going to be exclusive for the iPad as it will not have any web or print edition, and will only be delivered straight to the iPad. Each edition of The Daily will cost $0.99. It is also being said that Apple has taken great care to deliver a seamless delivery experience for The Daily, whereas News Corp. has seemingly hired 100 journalists just for this venture, something which depicts that both of these companies are dead serious about this project.

Regardless of all the serious pre-planning, it still remains to be seen whether or not The Daily is able to carve a niche of its own and redefine journalism at least on tablet devices. Do let us know in your comments what you think might become of the iPad exclusive newspaper, called The Daily.

Apple iPad Exclusive Newspaper ‘The Daily’ Reportedly Launching on January 19

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 06:02 AM PST

It was back in November last year when we reported that the Rupert Murdoch spearheaded News Corp. was planning to create an exclusive newspaper for the Apple iPad. This venture was dubbed as The Daily, and now Forbes reports that the planned launched date for this publication is January 19, 2011.

Forbes reports:

That's the planned launch date for The Daily, the iPad-only publication News Corp. has been feverishly developing. The company has yet to say boo about it, and a spokesman declined to comment when I asked him about the launch date, which comes via a News Corp. insider.

The debut can't come soon enough for The Daily's staffers, who for weeks have been engaged in full-scale dry runs, cranking out dummy issues for what I've been told is a distribution list of 1,000 privileged readers. (If you're on the list and you want to email me a few screen grabs, I'd take that ever so kindly.) Some of that content presumably consists of features that can be banked, but a lot of it is news, meaning its sell-by date will long have passed by the time The Daily goes live.

However, News Corp. has yet to say anything about the publication; nevertheless, they've put up a teaser at thedaily.com website which displays a logo with the message "Coming Soon"
